Nebraska is suddenly rife with political activity. Sen. Mike Johanns, a Republican, said he won’t run for reelection,  and there’s likely to be a competitive GOP gubernatorial primary:

Sen. Charlie Janssen announced today he is running for governor in 2014.

Janssen made it official today in front of a crowd of about 150 at Midland University in his hometown of Fremont. He didn’t come to the decision lightly saying the country took a wrong turn in 2008 and again in 2012.

Colleagues spoke Monday of Sen. Charlie Janssen as a straight-forward, small-town conservative who won’t back away from tough issues.

Janssen, in front of media members and sign-waving supporters, was flanked by his wife, Ellen, and the American Legion and VFW honor guard as he launched his gubernatorial campaign from the Midland University Event Center on President’s Day.

One day after announcing his candidacy for Governor, Charlie Janssen headed west for the Adams County Republican Paty Lincoln-Reagan Dinner. More than 120 Republicans participated in the event at the Hastings Hotel and Convention Center.

The dinner program featured a keynote speech from US Senator Deb Fischer, who served in the legislature with Charlie for four years.

"People sometimes ask me how I can effectively serve my constituents while running a statwide campaign,"...

FREMONT, NE – State Senator Charlie Janssen officially announced today that he is a candidate for Governor of Nebraska.

“I have made the decision to run after speaking with people across the state about our shared ideas for the next generation,” Janssen said. “Nebraskans believe, as I do, that we create more opportunity by empowering people than empowering government.”

Fremont Mayor Scott Getzschman and State Senators Scott Lautenbaugh of Omaha, Scott Price of Bellevue, and Tyson Larson of O’Neill participated in the announcement.

“Charlie won't shrink from any issue or candidate,” Lautenbaugh said. “He has a plan for our state, and I know he's ready and willing to lead.”

Janssen was elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2008 and reelected...
